U.S. and Israel Launch Coordinated Strikes on Iran, Expanding Regional Conflict

WASHINGTON — The United States and Israel carried out a sweeping series of coordinated military strikes against Iranian military infrastructure, marking one of the most expansive joint operations between the two allies in recent years and significantly escalating tensions across the Middle East.

President Donald Trump, addressing the nation from the White House, said the strikes were intended to ensure that Iran “can never have a nuclear weapon” and to degrade what he described as Tehran’s expanding missile capabilities. American officials confirmed that four B-2 Spirit stealth bombers flew from Whiteman Air Force Base on a nonstop, roughly 30-hour round-trip mission to strike underground ballistic missile facilities inside Iran.

According to a senior defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss operational details, the aircraft dropped multiple 2,000-pound precision-guided munitions designed to penetrate hardened structures. The targets were not nuclear enrichment plants but rather underground missile production and storage sites believed to be central to Iran’s retaliatory capacity.

The operation, supported by aerial refueling tankers staged from bases in Europe, demonstrated the long-range strike capability that American military planners have emphasized for decades. Defense analysts noted that such missions underscore Washington’s ability to project force globally without relying on forward-deployed bombers.

In parallel strikes, U.S. Navy vessels in the region launched Tomahawk missile cruise missiles at energy and naval infrastructure along Iran’s southern coast, including facilities associated with crude oil exports and military fuel storage. Satellite imagery reviewed by independent analysts showed extensive fires and structural damage at several sites.

Israeli forces simultaneously targeted what officials described as sensitive elements of Iran’s strategic weapons infrastructure. Israeli aircraft, including variants of the F-35I Adir, struck facilities linked to uranium conversion and military research. The Israeli government said its actions were coordinated with Washington but declined to provide operational specifics.

The strikes appear to build on a previous wave of attacks earlier in the year that focused on Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities. At that time, U.S. officials said the objective was to set back Tehran’s nuclear program by targeting deeply buried centrifuge halls. The latest operation suggests a shift in emphasis — from nuclear development to missile production and delivery systems, which Western officials argue pose an immediate threat to American forces and regional allies.

Iran’s government condemned the attacks as an act of aggression and vowed retaliation. Iranian state media reported casualties and damage to civilian-adjacent infrastructure, though independent verification has been limited. In the hours following the strikes, Iranian missiles reportedly targeted American installations in the Gulf, including facilities in Bahrain, and armed groups aligned with Tehran launched rockets and drones from Lebanon, Iraq and Yemen.

U.S. Central Command acknowledged that three American service members were killed and several others wounded in related hostilities. Pentagon officials did not specify where the casualties occurred but indicated they were connected to retaliatory attacks on regional bases.

The widening confrontation has rattled global energy markets. Damage to export terminals along Iran’s southern coast raised concerns about supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments. Prices rose sharply in early trading before stabilizing amid uncertainty over the scale and duration of the disruption.

Military experts cautioned against viewing the strikes as a definitive end to Iran’s missile or nuclear ambitions. “Infrastructure can be destroyed,” said one former senior defense official, “but the underlying technical knowledge and political intent are much harder to eliminate.” Iran has historically rebuilt components of its programs after previous sabotage and airstrikes.

At the same time, the operation showcased capabilities that few nations possess. The B-2 bombers, designed to evade sophisticated air defense systems, reportedly encountered no direct engagement from Iranian surface-to-air missile batteries. Whether that reflects gaps in Iran’s radar coverage, successful electronic warfare measures or deliberate restraint remains unclear.

The White House framed the mission as a limited but decisive action aimed at restoring deterrence. Critics in Congress, however, questioned the absence of a broader public debate before such a consequential escalation. Some lawmakers called for classified briefings to assess both the legal basis and the long-term strategic implications of the strikes.

As smoke continued to rise from targeted sites and regional militias signaled further reprisals, the prospect of a prolonged confrontation loomed. Diplomats at the United Nations urged restraint, warning that miscalculation could trigger a wider regional war.

For now, the United States and Israel appear to have delivered a forceful message about their willingness to act militarily against perceived threats from Tehran. Whether that message produces deterrence or deeper instability may depend less on the precision of the bombs than on the political decisions that follow.
