WASHINGTON — A group of survivors connected to the Jeffrey Epstein case has filed a lawsuit against former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleging that decisions made during the early stages of the Epstein investigation helped obscure critical information and allowed the financier to avoid more serious charges for years.

The lawsuit, filed this week and led by Maria Farmer—one of the first women to publicly accuse Epstein of abuse—brings together several survivors who say they have collectively spent more than $1.1 million pursuing legal action in their effort to seek accountability for how the case was originally handled.

Farmer, whose early allegations against Epstein in the 1990s helped bring public attention to the financier’s activities, has long argued that failures by law enforcement and political authorities contributed to a system that protected Epstein and those within his network. In the new complaint, the plaintiffs claim that key decisions made by officials in Florida during the early stages of the investigation prevented a more comprehensive examination of Epstein’s activities.

Pam Bondi, who served as Florida’s attorney general from 2011 to 2019, is accused in the lawsuit of helping conceal details connected to the earlier handling of the case. The complaint argues that actions taken during that period may have contributed to Epstein’s ability to avoid harsher legal consequences for years.

The lawsuit focuses on the broader handling of Epstein’s case during a period when he faced mounting allegations but received a controversial plea agreement that allowed him to serve a comparatively short sentence in a county jail. That agreement, reached in 2008, has long been criticized by victims’ advocates, legal experts and lawmakers who argue that it failed to reflect the seriousness of the accusations against him.

In recent years, renewed scrutiny of Epstein’s network and the institutions that interacted with him has led to multiple legal actions, congressional inquiries and civil lawsuits brought by survivors seeking accountability.

The plaintiffs in the new case say the legal action represents a long-overdue attempt to examine whether influential figures played a role in shielding Epstein from full legal scrutiny.

Bondi has not publicly responded in detail to the allegations contained in the lawsuit. Representatives for the former attorney general did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the filing.

Courts will first need to determine whether the claims meet the legal standards required to move forward, including questions about jurisdiction, evidence and the specific role Bondi may have played in decisions referenced by the plaintiffs.
