NATO’s E-7 Dream Shattered: France Goes It Alone with Saab in Blow to Alliance Standardization

The collapse of the NATO E-7 program has been brewing for months. Initially hailed as the ideal successor to the AWACS due to its advanced multi-role electronically scanned array (MESA) radar, the Wedgetail became mired in the same production quagmire that has plagued Boeing’s commercial and defense sectors. Partners grew increasingly frustrated with revised delivery timelines that pushed operational readiness perilously close to, and potentially beyond, the 2035 retirement date of the current E-3 fleet.

However, the fatal blow came from Washington. Sources within NATO indicate that the United States, citing critical domestic priorities and its own strategic recalibration towards the Pacific, quietly informed allies it was withdrawing its commitment to the joint procurement pool.
