For the first time, 48 national teams will compete instead of the traditional 32, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104. It will also be the first World Cup hosted jointly by three nations: the United States, Canada and Mexico.

When FIFA initially outlined the tournament structure, the United States was expected to host the majority of the games. Out of the 104 scheduled matches, roughly 60 were assigned to American cities, reflecting the country’s extensive sports infrastructure. But as planning progressed through 2024, several logistical challenges began to complicate preparations in the United States. In Canada, officials in Toronto and Vancouver accelerated infrastructure projects tied to transportation and stadium modernization. Upgrades to Toronto’s primary venue and surrounding transit networks were completed earlier than projected, while Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium introduced new lighting systems and broadcasting capabilities designed to meet FIFA’s production standards.

Mexico, which previously hosted the World Cup in 1970 and 1986, leaned heavily on its past experience. Cities such as Guadalajara and Monterrey also expanded airport capacity and improved transportation networks to accommodate the expected influx of visitors.

By late 2024, FIFA leadership began reviewing progress reports from all three host countries. According to officials familiar with the discussions, the organization concluded that redistributing a portion of the schedule would reduce logistical risk and provide greater flexibility for the tournament’s expanded format.

Under the revised arrangement, the United States will host 48 matches instead of the originally planned 60. Twelve games have been reassigned to Canada and Mexico, increasing their roles significantly. Mexico’s share will rise to 29 matches, while Canada will host 27.

The adjustments also affect several high-profile fixtures. At least one semifinal is expected to be played in Toronto, marking the first time Canada will host a match of that magnitude in World Cup history. Quarterfinal matches previously slated for American venues will now take place in Toronto and Mexico City.

Despite the shift, the United States remains the central stage of the tournament. American cities will still host the majority of games, including key knockout rounds, and millions of visitors are expected to travel throughout the country during the month-long competition.

FIFA officials framed the changes as part of routine contingency planning rather than a judgment about any one host nation’s capabilities.
