Europe Moves Toward Emergency Action as Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland

Brussels — European leaders moved swiftly into crisis mode on Monday after former President Donald Trump announced plans to impose sweeping new tariffs on European countries that refuse to support a United States takeover of Greenland, a move that has stunned diplomats, alarmed NATO allies, and triggered an emergency response across the European Union.

Ambassadors from all 27 EU member states convened in Brussels for an extraordinary meeting following Trump’s statement that he would levy tariffs ranging from 10 to 25 percent — or higher — against European nations that defend Greenland’s sovereignty or participate in military exercises with Denmark and Greenland.

This is an EU issue that affects many more countries than those now being singled out.”

Sweden confirmed it is coordinating closely with Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, and other EU partners on a unified response.

French President Emmanuel Macron went further, explicitly linking Trump’s Greenland threats to broader challenges to international order.

“France is committed to the sovereignty and independence of nations in Europe as elsewhere,” Macron said. “No intimidation nor threat will influence us — neither in Ukraine, nor in Greenland, nor anywhere else in the world.”

Macron confirmed France’s participation in joint security exercises with Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Arctic and Europe’s northern frontier.

NATO Crisis Fears Intensify

Perhaps the most sobering warning came from Poland’s prime minister, Donald Tusk, who described the scenario as a potential geopolitical catastrophe.

“A NATO member attacking another NATO member — and if that happens to be the United States — would be the end of the world as we know it,” Tusk said, cautioning that even the attempt to seize territory would destabilize the global security architecture.

The remarks underscore growing European concern that Trump’s rhetoric is eroding the credibility of NATO’s mutual defense commitments at a time of heightened global instability.

Trade War Fallout Already Spreading

The economic consequences are mounting quickly.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted Europe’s alternative path, pointing to a newly finalized free trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc of South American nations — Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia — creating a combined market of roughly 700 million consumers.

“We choose fair trade over tariffs,” von der Leyen said. “We choose productive, long-term partnerships over isolation.”

The agreement, formally signed in Paraguay, represents one of the largest trade expansions in decades and directly counters Trump’s tariff-heavy approach. European officials privately acknowledge that U.S. trade isolation has accelerated EU diversification efforts.

A Controversial “Peace Board” Proposal

Compounding diplomatic outrage, Bloomberg reported that Trump has proposed the creation of a so-called “Board of Peace,” requiring countries seeking permanent membership to pay him personally $1 billion.

According to draft documents obtained by Bloomberg, the funds would not flow to the U.S. Treasury but would be controlled directly by Trump. Even longtime U.S. allies reportedly rejected the proposal, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The White House has confirmed the existence of the proposal but insisted that the $1 billion payment is “not obligatory” — though permanent membership would require it.

Diplomats across Europe described the plan as unworkable, legally dubious, and deeply destabilizing, raising concerns that Trump is attempting to build a parallel institution to the United Nations under personal control.

Europe Moves On as Washington Isolated
