The response pattern has been remarkably consistent: attack the critic, question motives, escalate volume. What has been less consistent is the outcome. When the critic refuses to engage on Trump’s terms—when there is no debate, no bargaining over tone, no retreat—the performance falters. Few episodes illustrate this more clearly than Trump’s prolonged fixation on Robert De Niro.

De Niro is not a politician, nor has he tried to be one. His interventions have not taken the form of white papers or policy rebuttals.
