🚨 BREAKING: CAPITOL ON FIRE AS SENATE FINALLY TELLS TRUMP TO STEP DOWN.sumin

In a stark display of partisan alignment amid escalating U.S. military involvement in Iran, the Senate voted 53-47 on March 4, 2026, to block a bipartisan War Powers Resolution that would have required President Donald Trump to seek congressional authorization for continued hostilities or withdraw forces.

The measure, sponsored by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and supported by most Democrats plus Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), aimed to enforce the 1973 War Powers Resolution — a post-Vietnam law mandating presidential notification to Congress within 48 hours of deploying forces into combat and limiting unauthorized actions to 60 days absent explicit approval. It would have halted offensive operations against Iran unless Congress declared war or passed a specific authorization for use of military force.

Republicans, holding a slim majority, united almost entirely against it, with Paul’s lone defection reflecting his longstanding skepticism of executive war powers. One Democrat, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), crossed party lines to vote no. The tally effectively gave tacit backing to Trump’s campaign, now in its second month following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes that began February 28 targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites, escalating to regime-change rhetoric and widespread regional strikes.

The House followed suit the next day, rejecting a similar resolution 219-212 in a razor-thin vote. Four Democrats joined Republicans to defeat it, while two Republicans — Reps. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) — supported curbs on executive authority. The narrow margin underscored emerging cracks within the GOP, particularly as casualty reports mount and economic fallout from disrupted oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz drives gasoline prices higher.

The votes came against a backdrop of growing anti-war protests outside the Capitol and White House, with demonstrators disrupting Senate hearings and drawing parallels to early Vietnam-era movements. Organizers cite leaked estimates of over 1,200 civilian deaths in Iran and eight U.S. service members killed, fueling demands for congressional oversight. Yet institutional support for Trump remains firm: the administration argues the actions fall under Article II commander-in-chief powers to respond to imminent threats, including Iranian proxy attacks on U.S. interests.

Democrats decried the outcome as a surrender of Congress’s constitutional war-declaring authority under Article I. Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), whose version of the resolution also failed earlier, called it a “dangerous abdication” that risks entangling the nation in another open-ended conflict without debate or strategy. Critics point to historical precedents — from Vietnam to Iraq — where unchecked executive action led to prolonged wars and eroded public trust.

Trump has dismissed calls for authorization, framing the operation as necessary to counter Iranian aggression and support allies like Israel. White House statements hailed the congressional rejections as affirmation of presidential prerogative to protect national security.

The failed measures highlight deep divisions: while rhetoric from Democrats warns of constitutional crisis and unchecked executive power, Republican unity — driven by political calculations ahead of midterms — has shielded the administration from immediate restraints. With the 60-day War Powers clock ticking toward late April, pressure could build if casualties rise or economic pain intensifies. For now, Congress has chosen not to intervene, leaving the conflict’s trajectory largely in the president’s hands.

As protests swell and global oil markets reel, the votes serve as a sobering reminder: in polarized times, constitutional checks can falter when partisan loyalty prevails over institutional duty.
