LONDON — One hundred thousand arrivals in a single month. The figure, leaked from preliminary border data, has detonated across Britain’s political landscape like a nuclear warhead — throwing what government officials call “cold water” on the Prime Minister’s repeated assurances that borders are under control.

The numbers, which cover irregular arrivals, visa overstays, and channel crossings combined, represent a dramatic acceleration of migration flows that Whitehall had privately projected would take until 2027 to reach such levels. Instead, they hit in April — and the government was caught flat-footed.

“This is not a surge,” said one senior Home Office official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “This is a flood. And we do not have the infrastructure, the personnel, or the political capital to manage it.”

The timing could hardly be worse. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has staked significant political capital on his pledge to “take back control” of Britain’s borders — a promise that helped propel Labour to victory in the last election. But the leaked figures suggest that, if anything, control has slipped further.

For months, government ministers have pointed to declining channel crossing numbers as evidence that their deterrence policies were working. The new data tells a different story.
