Four found guilty of booing Anzac Day ‘welcome to country’ – soclon

Four nationalist activists who were among a crowd of people who booed a “welcome to country” humiliation ritual at Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance on Anzac Day last year have been found guilty and fined.

Jacob Hersant, Michael Nelson, Nathan Bull and Ian Lomax all fought charges of behaving in an offensive manner, offending against decency at the Shrine, and taking part in a disturbance within the Shrine, and appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Booing erupted from the crowd when professional aboriginal Mark Brown, who celebrated the death of US political figure Charlie Kirk and was met with even louder heckling this year, began welcoming dawn service attendees to their own country.

Mr Hersant was arrested at the scene, and the booing sparked a national debate on whether “welcome to country” performances belong on Anzac Day, with the largest-ever poll on the topic subsequently finding that 70% of Australians want them “stopped completely”.

Mr Hersant, Mr Nelson were convicted and fined $1,900 each, Mr Bull was convicted and fined $1,000, and Mr Lomax was fined $800 with no conviction recorded.

Far-left activist Jasmine Duff, who last year was ordered to donate to a pro-Palestine group while being spared a conviction for assaulting two Expo attendees, hurled abuse at Mr Hersant, Mr Nelson and Mr Bull, who are former members of the now-disbanded National Socialist Network, outside court. It's my country too': Aussies have their say on Welcome to ...

In a short street interview with reporters Mr Hersant said he disagreed with the magistrate’s decision, and that he thought the “welcome to country” had no place on Anzac Day.

“I think people should continue to boo the ‘welcome to country’, I think it’s a disgrace, especially at the Shrine of Remembrance. That’s the day where it should be about Australian soldiers, it shouldn’t be about aboriginal grievance politics,” he said.

“I agree Anzac Day is sacred, but I think that we weren’t disrupting Anzac Day, we were disrupting the ‘welcome to country’, and we view that as a disruption.

“How about we leave Anzac Day for the Anzacs.”

The convictions come a day after Sydney man Eli Toby was convicted and fined $880 for booing a “welcome to country” at Sydney’s Anzac Day Dawn Service this year.

Mr Toby pleaded guilty but refused to apologise in court, saying only “I’m sorry it has caused such an uproar, and I’m sorry to my family”.
