The world’s food supply may depend on a single Canadian province — and most people have no idea.
While everyone debates oil, inflation, and global trade wars, a silent battle over fertilizer is quietly deciding the future cost of food.

For decades, Americans assumed the country’s agricultural dominance was built on massive farmland, advanced machinery, and industrial farming power. But beneath that image sits a much more uncomfortable reality: the entire system depends on a pink mineral buried deep under the plains of western Canada.

That mineral is potash.

Most consumers never hear about it, yet it is one of the most important substances on Earth. Potash is the key source of potassium fertilizer, and without it, modern agriculture simply cannot function. Soil naturally loses potassium over time, and once those nutrients disappear, crop yields begin collapsing. Corn, wheat, soybeans — the backbone of North American food production — all rely heavily on this hidden resource.

And here’s the problem: the United States barely has enough of it.

Despite being an agricultural superpower, the US produces only a fraction of the potash its farmers actually need. According to data from the US Geological Survey, American farms consume more than 5 million metric tons of potash fertilizer every year. Domestic mining operations in places like Utah and Michigan produce only around 400,000 tons annually.

The rest comes from one place: Saskatchewan, Canada.

That single Canadian province contains roughly half of the world’s known potash reserves. Experts estimate Canada possesses enough supply to help feed the planet for nearly a century at current usage rates. Because of this geological advantage, Canada now supplies around 85–90% of all US potash imports.

In other words, the farms feeding millions of Americans are deeply dependent on Canadian fertilizer.

And suddenly, that dependency is becoming a political and economic flashpoint.

Recent US trade policies introduced tariffs on Canadian fertilizer imports, initially targeting rates near 25% before pressure from agricultural groups pushed them lower, closer to 10%. The goal sounded simple on paper: reduce dependence on foreign supply and encourage more domestic fertilizer production.

But agriculture doesn’t work like a political slogan.

Farmers can’t suddenly switch suppliers because there are almost no alternative sources large enough to replace Canada. Russia and Belarus also control significant potash reserves, but geopolitical tensions have made those supply chains risky and unreliable for Western markets.

That leaves American farmers trapped.

Fertilizer already represents nearly half of operating costs for many corn growers. At the same time, crop prices have remained weak for several years, squeezing profit margins thinner and thinner. Farmers cannot simply raise prices to compensate because global commodity markets determine the value of crops — not individual producers.

So when fertilizer prices rise, the damage goes straight to the bottom line.

For many family farms across states like Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, the impact is immediate and brutal. Higher input costs during planting season can erase already fragile profits overnight.

Some policymakers argue the solution is obvious: build more mines inside the United States.

There is already a proposed potash mining project in Michigan that received conditional approval for a massive federal loan. But mining isn’t something that appears overnight. Even with billions of dollars and government support, developing a major potash mine can take 10 to 15 years before reaching full production.

Farmers don’t have 15 years.

Every spring planting season arrives on schedule whether infrastructure is ready or not.

And even if new American mines eventually open, economists warn the outcome may still hurt farmers. Domestic production would likely cost more than importing cheaper Canadian supply, meaning tariffs could simply force farmers to pay premium prices anyway.

Meanwhile, Canada isn’t standing still.

The Canadian potash industry is expanding aggressively while the US debates policy. One of the largest mining projects in the world — BHP’s enormous Jansen Potash Mine in Saskatchewan — is already under development with an estimated cost of $14 billion.

The scale is staggering.

Once fully operational, the Jansen project alone could account for nearly 10% of global potash production. Canadian producers are also rapidly building export infrastructure aimed at Brazil, Europe, and Asian markets, reducing reliance on American buyers and strengthening Canada’s leverage in the global fertilizer trade.

This means the current trade tensions may end up accelerating Canada’s influence rather than weakening it.

For years, global power discussions focused almost entirely on oil and energy reserves. But a different reality is emerging beneath the surface of the modern economy.

The countries controlling fertilizer may ultimately control food itself.

And right now, one of the most powerful strategic resources on Earth sits buried beneath the Canadian prairies — quietly shaping the future cost of every meal on the table.
