For years, the image of women in ISIS-linked territories has been complex — some portrayed as victims, others as willing participants. Now, that ambiguity is being stripped away.
The government is making it clear: there will be consequences, regardless of gender.
Officials say that any returning woman with proven involvement could face serious criminal charges, ranging from supporting a terrorist organization to direct participation in extremist activities.
These are not minor offences — they carry the potential for long prison sentences under Australian law.
Beyond prosecution, there is another looming threat: deportation.
Authorities have indicated that individuals who are not citizens — or who hold dual nationality under certain conditions — could be removed from the country if deemed a security risk.
